5 Steps to Switching to Natural Deodorant

The world of natural deodorant can be a difficult road to navigate. The information out there can be confusing and we end up ignoring it and continuing to do what we have always been doing, using conventional deodorant. One thing that can’t be ignored though, is that the aluminum alone in conventional deodorant is so harmful to our bodies. It blocks our sweat glands, traps toxins within our body, messes with our hormones, and has been associated with breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, bone disorders, and kidney problems.

Here are our 5 steps to switching to natural deodorant:

Do Your Research

Before you make any sort of changes in life, you will want to make sure you do your research. Understand why aluminum is harmful in our beauty products and the negative effects it has on the health of our bodies. This will make it easier for you to sustain the change if you find any part of the process challenging or difficult. Understand the research and facts provides a foundation from which to base our change. As mentioned above, some of the top reasons to ditch aluminum are trapping toxins, messing with hormones, and its association to certain illnesses and diseases.

Decide To Make The Switch (+ And Find A Natural Deodorant To Try)

Once you have done your research, firmly decide to make the switch. Next challenge? Finding a natural deodorant that works with your unique body chemistry is a bit of trial and error. There are sticks, pots, crystals and salts that all claim to keep you stink-free, naturally. My suggestion? Make sure you detox your body to get rid of any toxins that are lingering in your body, and eliminate the bad bacteria that is causing you to smell in the first place. Once you have detoxed (see next step) give a few different brands a try. Our favourites are Kaia Naturals, Really Great Goods, and PIP Naturals.

Detoxing

There are a few steps when it comes to detoxing. The first is to understand that it won’t happen overnight and you have to give it some time for your body to stop the bad bacteria that is causing a smell. Next, try incorporating foods that help promote detoxification naturally in the body. Such foods include apples, broccoli, kale, beets and cilantro. You can also incorporate lemon water with some ginger into your day to help clean out your body. Some other tips for detox are: sweat out the toxins through exercise, eat clean unprocessed, whole foods, drink plenty of water, and wear looser clothes made from natural fabrics.

Don't Fret The Sweat

Keep in mind that switching to a natural deodorant means your body will start to sweat again as it no longer has aluminum blocking it. This is okay and in fact, something we really want to happen. Did you know that it’s not sweat itself that causes yellow stains, it is aluminum reacting with sweat that causes it.

Realize How Easy It Was To Make The Switch

Okay, maybe it wasn’t “easy” but it is so worth it. The health benefits alone make switching to a cleaner deodorant all that much better. At the end of the day, the chemicals found in our beauty products make their way into our bloodstream, ultimately affecting the health of our organs and our body.

Switching to a natural deodorant is both challenging and very rewarding. There will be ups and downs, smelly days, sweaty days, and days where you’re wondering why you didn’t switch sooner.
