By Vivian Xu. Dedicated student at Queen's University studying Life Science and Employment Relations.

Healthy eating is becoming more and more a priority with people placing a higher value on health and wellness. Living a healthy, clean lifestyle no longer refers to just the physical effects of illness and disease, but rather an overall state of being including not only physical, but emotional and mental well being, and balance. If you are on the journey towards a healthier diet, there is no doubt that homemade food is the way to go ensuring the ingredients are healthier and avoiding processed foods.

With the holiday season in full swing, here is one of our favourite homemade recipes.

Homemade Apple Cider Never Tasted So Good!

A classic holiday favourite - homemade apple cider with a twist.

Ingredients

  • 12 apples cored & quartered (put aside a couple apple slices to garnish drink)

  • 2 oranges peeled & quartered

  • 10 cups water

  • cinnamon stick

  • 4 whole cloves (Cloves are a warm spice with an intense flavour & aroma that pairs well with cinnamon)

Directions

  1. In a large pot, add apples, oranges, cinnamon stick and cloves.

  2. Add water. Note - if you add more ingredients, make sure water completely covers all ingredients in pot.

  3. Simmer over low heat for 1-1/2hours then mash fruit and simmer for 1 more hour.

  4. Strain cider through a fine-mesh strainer.

  5. Garnish with fresh apple or orange slices. Serve & enjoy!

  6. Store remaining cider in the refrigerator and reheat to serve.
