Tips to help you choose a Plastic Surgeon
In most countries, only physicians who are certified in Plastic Surgery are Plastic Surgeons. However, the rule doesn’t always apply to the term “Cosmetic Surgeon,” so it is not unusual to see other medical professionals such as dermatologists, dentists, or other doctors presenting themselves as Cosmetic Surgeons.
Choosing a Plastic Surgeon is a very personal decision and results are never 100% guaranteed. Here are a few tips to help you make your decision:
Find out if your surgeon is a member of an accredited association such as the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS) or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This ensures that your prospective surgeon has the proper in-depth training in all aspects of plastic surgery. Also check with your provincial college of physicians and surgeons to see whether the surgeon is licensed and if any disciplinary action has been taken against him/her.
Verify all credentials. Many cosmetic surgeons advertise they are “board-certified” however, requirements vary greatly depending on which professional board is cited. In Canada, only the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons certifies physicians and surgeons in medical specialties (www.rcpsc.medical.org). Anyone can claim to be a doctor, cosmetic surgeon or plastic surgeon. It is important to verify these claims with a reliable, independent source.
Ask the surgeon how often he or she performs the procedure you want and what the complication rates are. Quite often you can check before and after photos on the surgeon's company website prior to your appointment. The number of photos in the surgical gallery can also provide you with a general idea of how many similar surgical procedures have been performed by this surgeon.
Ask the surgeon whether they have hospital admitting privileges in case of complications after surgery. Call the hospital to verify the information. If the doctor has an in-office operating suite, ask if it is certified.
Ask what steps the surgeon will take if complications occur, especially after hours when the facility is closed. Discuss if further surgery is needed as a result of a complication, what type of follow-up care will be given. You want a surgeon that will pay close attention to you should a complication from your surgery arise. If he/she does not even mention complications, you might want to take a closer look.
Ask your family physician or other knowledgeable medical professionals their opinion of your prospective surgeon. Always get a physical from your family doctor and complete any blood tests, ultrasounds, mammograms or MRIs to see if you have any health problems that might make cosmetic surgery risky.
Physicians and surgeons carry medical malpractice insurance. Verify whether or not your prospective surgeon has it. In Canada, physicians and surgeons carry medical malpractice insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective.
Be cautious of any surgeon who “guarantees” satisfaction and results, or minimizes the risks and recovery time involved.*
Ensure that the individual giving the general anesthesia is properly certified.
Informed consent. Ask for a copy of the patient consent form prior to making your decision so you can take it home to review. Make sure you have a thorough evaluation and fully understand all aspects of the procedure. Before any medical procedure, patients should provide their medical history, and be examined and evaluated for the specific treatment or procedure. You should receive detailed information about the procedure’s benefits and risks as well as any post-surgical care requirements. Be sure to read it carefully before signing.
Effective communication is essential. In order for your plastic surgeon to understand your expectations, be thorough when discussing your surgical goals.
Most importantly, feel comfortable with the surgeon you have selected and never feel pressured to agree to more procedures than you want or are comfortable with, regardless of the price.
*It is important to note #9 in this article - "Be cautious of the surgeon who “guarantees” satisfaction ..." We have noticed many social media Breast Implant Illness forums have individuals commenting on breast explant surgery & claiming you should only book with a plastic surgeon who will "guarantee" Enbloc breast explant surgery. Outcomes from any surgery can never be 100% guaranteed.
