Defining Success

By Ariel Colhoun Passionate about increasing the sphere of influence for women & driving positive change.

The race – bigger, better, faster

On the surface, it often seems like more and more people are in some kind of competitive race – constantly trying to compete to be bigger, better, faster. Why? Why are we so competitive? Being prosperous does not equate to being superior. Why not be supportive and work together to raise everyone up together in unison? What is the rush to excel and race past others and leave the rest behind? What inner satisfaction are you actually gaining for yourself by intentionally leaving others in your shadows? If you have been blessed with the natural gift of innovation, wouldn’t you want to share this with others who may not have been as blessed as you?

I believe when you follow your passions and you are able to achieve your dreams, success is more rewarding when you can share it with others rather than keep it all to yourself.

Success is a stimulus

When defined by most, success can be achieved both physically and spiritually. Without the quest for success and the desire to achieve, we may never have the drive to pursue our wishes. Success is not spontaneous. Success is a stimulus. It acts as a catalyst to assist in bringing purpose to our lives. Success allows us to fulfill our most basic needs along with our spiritual goals. Define success according to you. What does success look like to you?

When most people think of success they equate it to leading a financially prosperous life. Of course, we all need money to survive, as it is part in parcel with the way our world currently operates. Moreover, the money you may make from fulfilling your wishes may end up being the happiest money you will ever make.

Keep your ego in check

Learn to keep your ego in check when it comes to financial success. If excessive financial success for personal purposes is your only focus, you may not hesitate to make decisions that are false-hearted and justify these undertakings as simply being efficient or part of the process.

Don’t let 'ink on paper' be the only driver that causes you to make empty choices. Success does have a direct correlation to money but I would encourage you to be willing to look beyond that. Money does have a role and does indeed have a purpose, and if used in a manner that is beneficial to all and makes the world a better place, you can achieve great success on a number of levels.

Material possessions

Try also not to confuse success with material possessions. We spend much of our lives amassing ‘things’ we perceive to be symbols of our success. At the time of death, these ‘things’ will all be left behind. What you bring with you remains in your thoughts and consciousness, so don’t forget that while you are here. Material possessions are a temporary and short-term pleasure. Personal success is held best in your own mind, free of external input. Personal success is accountable to you and your perception of what your ingredients are for achievement. Your soul and how you fuel your thoughts and intentions are eternal. Live this life as part of a greater everlasting life. A balanced viewpoint of success combined with good intentions may be far more rewarding in the end.

Setting goals

What is your ultimate end goal? Knowing the outcome you want in the long run will help define what success looks like and means to you. When on the path to fulfilling your wishes, you need to set goals along the way, determine whether or not your goals are feasible, and establish your interpretation for your success. Every stage of your life your ideals and images of success may change and that is okay and is perfectly normal. We are constantly evolving. We don’t have to stay on a set course. Understand that unless you are attending or have attended a progressive educational system, the traditional schooling system hasn’t kept in alignment with our evolution. Education is one institution that has not evolved to the fullest extent of where it could be. Ideals that were set generations ago no longer seem relevant in today’s environment. Make sure your expectations are in alignment with the here and now, and not left in the past of what used to be.

What if you knew you only had 30 days to live?

If you were told you only had 30 days to live, would success look different to you then? Would money be removed from the equation? Would you feel better knowing that you at least tried to pursue your wishes rather than dealing with potential regret and the unknown? Don’t let unknown unknowns drive your choices.

Whatever you decide to pursue and put your heart into, expect to succeed – no holding back, no excuses, no negative what-ifs, never settle. Always anticipate success but recall the famous saying that “patience is a virtue”. Expect to succeed but be more accepting of wide-ranging timelines to fulfill your wishes. We cannot force our wishes to come true at a given pace. We cannot force the laws of nature, our surroundings, things that are beyond our control, or alternate effects that may be contingent upon our wishes coming true. Recognize that your wishes may even change along the way. Furthermore, your view of success may also change over the course of your wish journey - and that is okay.

Think of your life as a blank canvas

Your overall contentment and perspective on success are blank canvases. Some people need little and others need a lot to feel ‘full’. If you try to live your life in harmony with your environment, your life will instinctively become more meaningful and you will have a healthier overall outlook on life itself. Real success is achieved when you know you have made not only your own life meaningful, but those around you as well. Success includes a whole host of ingredients. Wishes that embrace the best of intentions and a positive attitude will naturally bring you the spiritual wealth, financial wealth, power and influence that you are looking for.
