Post-Surgery Recovery Options - Where Will You Recover?

Before proceeding with any type of surgery you will need to understand your short-term post-surgery recovery options.

Immediately after any type of surgery, you will be taken into a recovery room for close observations and patient monitoring prior to your discharge. A typical recovery period is the same as the length of surgery. For example, if your surgery is set for 3 hours, the typical recovery period will be 3 hours. In addition, if your surgery requires a general anesthetic, you will require an adult caregiver to assist you when you are discharged. You will only be released to the care of a responsible pre-designated adult with a safe, licensed method of transportation, or to your short-term stay provider. If you do not have access to a personal caregiver, you can ask your medical professional for home-care nursing professionals to assist you.

Short-term post-surgery recovery options include:

  1. Home - It's always nice to go home to recover if you have the option. If you plan on recovering at home you will need to choose a responsible adult caregiver. When discharged, your pre-designated caregiver must be competent enough to understand your recovery instructions, monitor your health, and commit to staying with you at all times for a minimum of 24 hours post-surgery. Make sure your home base is set up prior to your surgery. This may include extra pillows on your bed, frozen peas or ice packs in the freezer, readily accessible books, magazines, tablets, etc.

  2. Licensed Recovery Facility - Many clinics/ plastic surgery facilities offer private overnight accommodation for an additional fee. If your facility does not offer aftercare, there may be other licensed recovery facilities in the nearby area. Should you choose a licensed recovery facility, you will be released to the care of a licensed post-surgical recovery facility where nurses or specially trained medical professionals will monitor your health and comfort until you are able to return home and take care of yourself.

  3. Hotel or Spa - You may also consider your post-surgery recovery at a local hotel or spa location, where licensed healthcare professionals will monitor your recovery around the clock. Ask your plastic surgeon for details.

  4. Overnight Hospital Stay - For those who have surgery at a hospital check to see if overnight accommodation is also available. After the hospital setting, you will then be released to a responsible adult caregiver to continue your recovery at home or to another licensed recovery facility.
