"A woman's perfume tells more about her than her handwriting."
- Christian Dior
Perfume speaks its own language. And because perfume combines with your own body chemistry, the language it speaks is entirely your own. Sometimes your language can be soft and subtle, while other times it can be fresh, inspiring, mysterious, and exotic. It's all up to you and the scent you wear that will leave an invisible impression.
When To Wear It
When you decide to wear it, it is up to you - and remember some fragrances last longer than others. In general, eau de cologne typically lasts 1-2 hours, eau de toilette 2-4 hours, and perfume up to 6 hours. All fragrances will dissipate over time and depend on the exposure to heat, moisture, air, and sunlight, and will need to be reapplied should you wish it to last throughout the entire day - or night ;)
Sometimes on any given day, depending on what we are doing we may want to switch up our perfume language completely. To avoid overlap of varying fragrances try:
Fresh & Subtle - Start your day with a lighter fragrance. A lighter fresh and subtle scent works best in the morning. Remember, it also depends on where you are going - many workplaces, hospitals, and other locations prefer a fragrance-free environment.
Blank Canvas - If you are changing up the pace in the evening, sometimes a clean slate is best when applying a different scent as not all scents work well together when combined - we suggest putting your hair in a shower cap and hopping in the shower for a quick rinse before applying a new fragrance. Don't forget, all the products you use including soaps, body washes, and body lotions, will also have a direct effect on your perfume and body chemistry, so make sure you use fragrances that complement one another.
A young lady asked, "Where should I apply perfume?"
"Where you want to be kissed"
- Coco Chanel
Where To Wear It
According to Apollonius of Herophila circa 420BC in a Treatise on Perfumes, "Perfumes smell sweetest when the scent comes from the wrist." and according to Coco Chanel, "Where you want to be kissed." We think both are right!
Fragrances work best on pulse points - the points on your body where your body temperature is slightly warmers such as your wrists, your neckline, behind your ears, between your breasts, and in your fossa (elbow crease). The warmth from your body encourages evaporation and will release the fragrance continuously. Note: When wearing perfume in warmer weather, avoid applying to skin that is exposed to direct sunlight - you may find some fragrances that will leave a stain or dark ring.
Choosing A Scent
When choosing a new perfume, make sure to invest the same amount of time in making your decision just as you would with any other piece of clothing. Perfumes can be expensive, so you want to make sure you love the fragrance you choose. When narrowing down your choices, rather than spraying the perfume on a scent stick:
Apply a small amount to your wrist - within 1/2 hour the scent will have combined with your body chemistry and if you still love the way it smells on you, then you will know this is the one. Try not to test more than four samples at a time - believe me, it will get confusing if you try more.
Ask for a sample. Some perfume companies make small samples that you can take home with you. This way you will be able to try a few scents out for a couple of days, and test out how others like it on you as well.
Whatever fragrances you choose, sometimes it's nice to maintain a consistent 'signature' scent that has your name on it - remember, the scent you wear that will leave an invisible and lasting impression.
Happy shopping!
