Social Media & Developing A Thick Skin

By Ariel Colhoun Passionate about increasing the sphere of influence for women & driving positive change.

The Allure of a Social Media Following

Let's face it, the thought of having hundreds, or even thousands, of followers on a social media platform comes with great allure. But as we have seen and are all too familiar with, the world is full of both lovers and haters.

When you make the decision to put yourself out there and become part of any social media platform, you better have some thick skin and prepare for the worst. No one, including well-known celebrities and social media influencers, is immune.

EGO and Beauty

This is the era of the ego - Everybody's Got One. It's all about the here and now, instant responses, superficial beauty, and fake e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Literally. Nothing is good enough. Nothing is big enough. Everything is based on temporary satisfaction and always on to the next big thing.

What happened to the good old-fashioned beauty? The clean and simple beauty where we love our bodies for who we are? We should love our wrinkles, for each one tells a story. We should love our scars, as they are reminders of everything we have overcome. We should love being who we are at every stage of our lives. We are truly beautiful in each and every way. It's time to start embracing the good old-fashioned beauty, our true beauty.

Everyone Has An Opinion

If you already have a social media platform, or you are thinking about expanding your presence, proceed with caution. Remember that no matter what you do, what you say, or what your photos or videos you choose to post - everyone will have an opinion. You will find everything from the good and the bad, to the downright ugly, so it's important to stay true to you and develop a 'thick' skin and not take things so personally. Remember, most followers will only know you by your public posts on social media and will never know you on a personal level - so take everything with a grain of salt.

So remember ... everyone has an opinion and let the comments roll off your shoulders and learn to love yourself for who you are.
