The Fear Reflex

By Ariel Colhoun Passionate about increasing the sphere of influence for women & driving positive change.

/fear/

Definition:

A distressing emotion caused by the anticipation of perceived impending pain, threat or danger of something bad that is going to happen.

The primitive reflex of fear can wreak havoc on your body – your heart may begin to race at an excessive pace, your adrenaline glands work on overtime, your blood pressure reacts unfavourably, and your mind … well your mind begins to analyze, over-analyze, and create various extreme scenarios that may or may not happen.

Depending on the type of fear, fear can be somewhat of a ticking time bomb when it relates to your decisions. Fear drives so many emotions and often controls our choices in life. Sometimes this fear can be so strong it is paralyzing and it ultimately prevents you from moving forward with your life and actually pursuing your dreams.

You can give in to fear and let it weaken you, or you can take a leap of faith and dive right into your fears and have the belief that everything is going to be okay. The fear of the unknown is a given, is ever-present, and all of our fears have the tendency to emerge naturally. When we feel fear, our bodies tend to invoke that expected protective instinct and we inherently know to proceed with caution.

Trust your intuition

Gaining a better understanding of all the various types of fear we could potentially experience in our lifetimes and mastering our natural animal instincts could help us all grow tremendously at the root level. It’s all about trusting our own intuition, embracing challenges, and losing the resistance or hesitations that are associated with trying something new. How should we expect to feel when we are trying something new for the first time?

We all need to learn to decipher our fears and ‘fear less’. Ceasing to worry too much and reducing our fears involves hard work, dedication on our part, and the ability to make small but consistent adjustments on how we think, react and respond. We need to recognize that our minds are naturally subject to fears, misconceptions and doubts, and that controlling our impulses is a skill that we can all develop over time. We need to make a serious effort to cultivate all the positive qualities that surround us all that give way to our own individual lives for the potential to be filled with true inner bliss. We can all have our own individual inner nirvana within the greater world of the outer and infinite nirvana.

Is fear preventing you from pursuing your dreams?

Quite often I hear “I am too scared” to follow my dreams. You are not alone in your thoughts. I think many people feel the same. When you are on the path to something new it can be a little scary, but not everyone will show it or respond in the same manner. When you are faced with fearful decisions how do you react – is it fight or flight? What potential obstacles do you fear, or are you trying to avoid, that prevent you from pursuing your wishes?

It is imperative that you identify and address all your fears, concerns, and issues in order to provide yourself with solutions. Transition is always difficult but the conversation begins with you. When fear enters your mind, body and soul, your brain is naturally designed to take the safer route. However, understanding the root causes of your fears, and dealing with them rationally, will enable you to follow your dreams without becoming discouraged. Know that releasing your fears can be rewarding and life-altering. You will become more harmonious with your soul once you make more positive choices that will enhance your new vision of your life. We are able to create change by building our own courage.

So take a chance, embrace those butterflies and try something new ... you never know where it may lead you.
