Tips For Showering After Breast Augmentation Surgery

When you are ready to begin showering after your surgery, your surgeon will provide you with proper instructions that are specific to your type of post-operative surgery. Keep in mind most stitches need to keep dry for a minimum of 48 hours after surgery.

Below are some additional informative and general tips.

In Order To Prevent Infection:

  • DO NOT shower until your drains have been removed.

  • DO NOT use any bathing products that have added scents or oils.

  • DO NOT have a tub bath for 1 month after your surgery unless approved by your surgeon. A bath means any soaking in water that does not come out of a clean tap. This includes swimming, using a hot tub ... basically, anything that saturates your incision with water.

  • DO NOT have spa treatments that include soaking or being rubbed with oils, clays, muds, etc. near the incision area.

Note: You still need to keep your body clean, so make sure to either have a sponge bath or shower when approved by your surgeon.

Shower Tips

  • If you only have one compression bra, this would be a good time to have it washed.

  • For the first two weeks minimum, use unscented products and body washes on your body only as directed by your surgeon. Some surgeons will provide an unscented body wash for you to use after your surgery.

  • If you are wearing a compression bra, the first few times you shower, make sure you lay down prior to taking it off. Remain laying down for 5 minutes so your body can adjust to the removal of your bra. Moving too quickly may cause a change in blood pressure that will make you feel faint. When you are ready, sit at the side of your bed for another 5 minutes.

  • When you are ready to take your shower, walk slowly, and make sure someone is close by to assist you in case you feel faint or otherwise.

  • Make sure your shower is not too hot!

  • If your surgeon has approved the surgical tape to get wet, gently wash the incision area well with your unscented body wash and the remainder of your body.

  • Rinse well.

After Each Shower

  • Be sure to use clean towels.

  • Gently pat yourself dry and try not to rub. You can also use a cold hairdryer to dry yourself.

  • If you are waiting for your compression bra to dry, have a rest in your bed after your shower while your bra is washing/drying.

  • Put your bra back on.

Compression Bra

  • Due to the type of material, most compression bras are made of you will need to either put your bra in a protective washing garment bag on the gentle cycle in your washing machine or simply hand wash. Then either hang your bra up to line dry or use the no-heat setting on your dryer.

  • We recommend buying 2 compression bras so you always have one clean one available. Most surgeons will provide you with a bra as part of your surgery.
