History

With humble beginnings, Mentor started with only 4 employees and an initial $50,000 investment. It went public in 1970. Originally it started as a urology company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and later acquired by the Heyer-Schulte division of American Hospital Supply located in Irvine, California in 1984. The acquisition proved fruitful and more than doubled Mentor's sales and diversified its product lines. Heyer-Schulte produced several implantable medical devices, including breast implants, and gave Mentor a prominent position in the plastic surgery market.

Mentor later moved its headquarters from Minneapolis to the Heyer-Schulte facilities in Santa Barbara in 1985. In 1999, Mentor makes the strategic decision to divest its ophthalmology division and concentrate on plastic and reconstructive surgery, and urology. Then in May of 2006, Mentor divested the urology business as well and focus completely on aesthetic medicine. In November of 2006, Mentor received FDA approval for its MemoryGel® (silicone gel-filled) Breast Implants for use in breast augmentation and reconstruction surgery.

Johnson & Johnson
